Bridges are an important part of the transport infrastructure

Approximately 120,000 bridges of different types and functions exist in Germany. Therefore, in our society they are an indispensable component of the functioning transport infrastructure.

High stresses and deterioration factors on bridge structures

Besides the permanently fluctuating environmental influences bridge structure have to resist the static and dynamic loads of the increasing traffic volume as well as the exposure to chlorides and salt spread for the purpose of de-icing. Many bridges are already 40-50 years old and therefore at the limit of their originally planned lifespan.

Adapting repair measures

Due to the necessity of maintaining the traffic flow, and due to the often very limited funding, it is important to establish and assess the current condition of existing bridge structures and to economically adapt any repair measures to the current and future requirements.
